Allows appointee to act as a notary public in the state of Iowa. The notary public may witness or attest to a signature; administer an oath or affirmation; certify or attest to a copy of a document; and perform various other notarial acts.

Who Applies Any person wishing to act as a notary public.
When To Apply Prior to performing any notarial act.
Initial Requirements An applicant for a commission as a notary public shall meet all of the following qualifications: a. Be at least eighteen years of age. b. Be a citizen or permanent legal resident of the United States. c. Be a resident of or have a place of employment or practice in this state. d. Be able to read and write English. e. Not be disqualified to receive a commission under section 9B.23. If a non-resident ceases to work or maintain a place of business in Iowa, the notary commission expires.
Duration Three-year term for a resident of Iowa. One-year term for a non-resident of Iowa.

Renewal Requirements The secretary of state, two months preceding the expiration of a commission, shall notify the notary public of the expiration date and furnish a blank application for reappointment.
