Who Applies Individuals who have completed a professional service license program seeking to serve as a school counselor, school psychologist, speech-language pathologist, supervisor of special education (support), director of special education of an AEA, school social worker, or school audiologist.

When To Apply Prior to beginning duties as in a professional service area.

Initial Requirements Master\'s degree and completion of a professional service license program specific to an education setting.

Duration Initial Professional Service License - 2 years. Full Professional Service License - 5 years.

Processing Time Four to six weeks.

Renewal Requirements Initial professional service license may be renewed twice, requires the mandatory reporter trainings for child and dependent adult abuse. The second (and final) renewal also requires proof of employment that will lead to the full professional service license. Two years of successful service in an Iowa public school, or three years in an accredited private school or out of state setting are required to move to the full professional service license. Full professional service license: Four licensure renewal units are required every five years and the mandatory reporter trainings for child and dependent adult abuse.

Additional Information A Class G counseling license is a one-year license available to those who have completed all school counseling coursework except for the internship. Not eligible for conditional teaching licensure or to add teaching endorsements.
