Registration of Aboveground Storage Tanks

The State Fire Marshal requires notification of the existence of any aboveground storage tank and specific information including age, size, type, location and uses.  There is an exception for certain size tanks located on farms.

Code Citation Iowa Code 101.22

Who Applies All existing, new, replacement and out-of-service aboveground flammable and combustible liquid tanks of 1,101-gallon capacity or greater shall be registered with the State Fire Marshal. EXCEPTION FOR FARMS: Tanks storing flammable liquids (gasoline) with a capacity of 2,000 gallons or less are NOT required to be registered. Tanks storing flammable liquids (diesel) with a capacity of 5,000 gallons or less are NOT required to be registered. Definition of frm as it applies to this regulation: \\”Farm\\” means land and associated improvements used to produce agricultural commodities, if at least one thousand dollars is annually generated from the sale of agricultural commodities. \\”Commodities\\” means crops as defined in Iowa Code section 202.1 or animals as defined in Iowa Code section 459.102. Current above ground tanks on farms that comply with these requirements are not required to be registered with the State Fire Marshal\\’s office.

When To Apply Notification must take place within thirty days of the existence of the tank.

Initial Requirements IAC 661—224.5(101) Approval of plans. A registration tag for a new aboveground storage tank shall not be issued prior to approval by the state fire marshal of plans for the installation of the tank and payment of the required plan review fee. The state fire marshal may require inspection of the tank and payment of an inspection fee prior to use of the tank.

Processing Time Thirty days.

Fee Structure Registration fee: $20 (for each tank must accompany a notice) Late fee: $25 (imposed for a tank registered after the required date)

Renewal Requirements Annually.
