Private pesticide applicators apply ”Restricted Use Pesticides” as the PRODUCER of an agricultural commodity, on lands owned or otherwise under the direct control of the individual, are required to be certified as a private pesticide applicator to meet federal and state requirements.

Who Applies The individual who will be applying Restricted Use Pesticides for the purposes of producing an agricultural commodity on property owned or under the direct control of the individual must be certified. This classification is NOT for individuals who apply pesticides for hire. Those individuals should refer to requirements for Pesticide Applicator, Commercial.

When To Apply Any time prior to taking possession of a Restricted Use Pesticide.

Initial Requirements No formal education, training or supervised practice is required to become a certified private pesticide applicator. However, an applicant must study the ”Private Pesticide Applicator Study Guide (publication PSEP 0001)”, available from Iowa State University Extension.

Duration 3 years.

Processing Time Approximately 2 weeks to 1 month.

Fee Structure Application: $15 – for a 3 year certification

Renewal Requirements An individual may choose to renew a private applicator certification by retesting every three years or by attending two hours of continuing instruction approved by the IDALS each training year. The private pesticide applicator training year runs from April 16 through April 15. Most training sessions for a training year are held during the winter months, November through March.

Exam An applicant must pass the Iowa Private Pesticide Applicator Certification exam specific to the types of pest controlled. The exams are given at various sites, see link below: https://iowaagriculture.gov/pesticide-bureau/applicator-licensing-certification
