Licenses required to perform electrical work in Iowa.

Who Applies Businesses and persons who wish to perform electrical work in Iowa and are qualified to do so.

When To Apply Prior to expiration of an existing license for renewal; prior to conducting an electrical installation for new licensees.

Initial Requirements Requirements vary by type of license. See Administrative Rule Chapter 502.

Duration Electrical Contractor, Residential Electrical Contractor, Master Electrician, Residential Master, Journeyman Electrician, Residential Electrician, and Special Electrician - 3 years. All other licenses - 1 year.

Processing Time Some online license applications can be approved within 1-2 day business days. Online license applications can be completed by going to: iowaelectrical.gov and clicking on the Electrical Licensing System icon. 2-3 weeks for manual license applications.

Fee Structure $375 for Electrical Contractor, Residential Electrical Contractor, Master Electrician, Residential Master. $75 for Journeyman Electrician, Residential Electrician, and Special Electrician. $20 for Apprentice Electrician (Currently enrolled in United States Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program) and Unclassified Person.

Renewal Requirements Continuing Education approved by the Electrical Examining Board.

Exam PSI examination; sponsorship by state Electrical Examining Board is required.
