Who Applies Registered dental assistants who want to engage in dental radiography or nurses working in a dental office who want to engage in dental radiography.

When To Apply Application must be made and a qualification issued before the dental assistant or Iowa-licensed nurse may practice dental radiography. Those who are working as dental assistant trainees may train in dental radiography on-the-job,

Initial Requirements Must be registered, on trainee status, or hold an active Iowa nursing license. Requires successful completion of Board-approved training program and national board radiation exam or state radiology exam. Radiology requirements are in addition to requirements for registration to practice as a dental assistant in Iowa.

Duration Two years; qualification expires August 31 of odd-numbered years, at same time as registration if applicable.

Processing Time Two weeks.

Fee Structure Qualification Application: $40; Renewal: $40 every odd-numbered year.

Renewal Requirements Completion of two hours of continuing education in the subject area of dental radiography

Exam State exam, Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) exam in radiation safety or another exam prior-approved by the Board.
