The Paramedic is an allied health professional whose primary focus is to provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Paramedics function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Paramedics perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Paramedic is a link from the scene into the health care system.

Who Applies Any individual who wishes to become certified as a Paramedic.

When To Apply After successful of an approved Paramedic course.

Initial Requirements An applicant must successfully complete a Paramedic course, be 17 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, be proficient in reading writing and speaking English and have current Iowa certification as an EMT or AEMT.

Duration Two years.

Processing Time Two weeks.

Fee Structure Initial Certification Application Fee: $30 Renewal Fee: $25

Renewal Requirements 60 hours of approved continuing education and current certification in CPR.

Exam National Registry of EMTs cognitive and psychomotor examination for the Paramedic.

Additional Information Applicants must complete a background check before certification.
