Workers in this profession perform radon or radon decay measurements in buildings, and provide professional advice on radon and radon decay measurements, radon entry routes, and health risk assessments. (Radon decay products are a result of the radon decay chain and are also radioactive.)

Who Applies Anyone who conducts radon or radon decay products tests for reimbursement in the State of Iowa.

When To Apply Before testing begins.

Initial Requirements Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have two years of relevant professional work experience (post-secondary education in a related field may be substituted for professional experience). They must complete a radon measurement course approved by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and pass either the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) or National Radon Safety Board (NRSB) radon measurement proficiency examination. A quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) plan and the standard operating procedures used in performing radon measurements for each device must also be submitted to HHS. Radon tests must be reported to the department monthly and within 30 days of completion.

Processing Time 30 days.

Fee Structure Certification Fee: $250 Application Fee: $ 25 – Resident; $100 – Non-resident Renewal: $250 Fees are non-refundable. A late fee of $25 is applied each month after certification expiration date. Course and exam fees will vary depending upon provider and/or location.

Renewal Requirements At least eight hours of department approved continuing education on radon are required to be completed and proof of submitted every two years for recertification.

Exam Applicants must take and pass a Radon Measurement Proficiency Examination administered by either the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) or the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB).
