About
License to mine minerals such as gypsum, clay, stone, sand, gravel, or other ores or mineral solids, in Iowa and registration of all mining sites.

Who Applies Any person wishing to mine minerals in Iowa must obtain a mining license and register all sites prior to the beginning of mining or the removal of overburden.
When To Apply Application must be made and a license and registration granted before mining begins in Iowa.
Initial Requirements A surety bond is required for each mining site.
Duration License and site registration expire on December 31 following the date of issuance.
Processing Time 30 days
Fee Structure New License: $50 Renewal: $20 Site Registration Application: $50 per site Site Registration Renewal: $70 per site per two-year renewal
Renewal Requirements Renew every two years.
Exam No exam.
Additional Information Mining companies are also required to apply for permitting through DNR, County planning & zoning, and MSHA before any mining or removal of overburden can begin.
