About
A permit to discharge wastewater to a body of water (any surface water or impoundment) in the state. The permit specifies conditions necessary to comply with federal law and state water quality standards.

Who Applies Anyone planning to discharge wastewater to any water of the state is required to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit from the Department of Natural Resources.
When To Apply At least 180 days before anticipated discharge.
Initial Requirements Antidegradation alternatives analysis and application forms.
Duration Up to 5 years.
Processing Time At least 90 days from the time a completed application is received.
Fee Structure Application: $85 Annual fees are due every August. Fee amounts vary according to facility type. See Code of Iowa 455B.197 for details.
Renewal Requirements Applications for renewal must be received by the Department at least 180 days prior to the expiration of the permit.
