About

Permits for the discharge of stormwater associated with industrial activity. These permits are required for stormwater discharges from:
  • certain industries
  • construction sites where the work being completed will result in one acre or more of ground being disturbed. May be required for sites smaller than one acre if the site is part of a larger common plan of development (i.e. housing development) that will disturb one acre or more.

Who Applies The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) of an industrial facility determines if it needs a storm water permit for operation. Also, any construction activity such as clearing, excavating, or grading which results in one or more acres of disturbed soil are required to obtain a storm water permit from the Department of Natural Resources.

When To Apply Apply well in advance of the commencement of construction activities or operation of an industrial facility as the permit authorization must be issued prior to commencement of the activity. Initial Requirements Check for local ordinances/requirements (city or county).

Duration General permits: Annual, 3-year, 4-year, or 5-year coverage available. Individual permits for some types of industrial facilities are issued for five years.

Processing Time Approximately one month after applying with paper applications and one week with online applications for general permit authorizations. Six months or more for individual permits which are required for some industrial facilities. Online application process can be accessed on the DNR\\’s website at the link below.

Fee Structure General permits: Annual: $175 Three-year: $350 Four-year: $525 Five-year: $700

Renewal Requirements Permits and permit authorizations can be renewed, if necessary, prior to expiration. The fees are the same as for initial issuance.
