Applicable proposed projects require a Section 401 Water Quality Certification from the Department of Natural Resources to ensure that the project will not violate state water quality requirements.

When To Apply Simultaneous to applying for a Section 404 permit from the Corps of Engineers.
Initial Requirements If dredging or filling activities are planned, check with the Corps of Engineers to determine if a Section 404 permit and a Section 401 Water Quality Certification are required. If a Section 401 Water Quality Certification is required, follow the process described on the Iowa DNR’s Section 401 Water Quality Certification website.
Duration Valid until the applicable federal permit or license expires.
Processing Time Processing time averages 60-120 days, and can be extended pursuant to federal law.
