Licensure and inspection is required for all establishments that slaughter or process cattle, sheep, swine, goats, domestic deer, elk, poultry and ratites.

Code Citation IC 189-A

Who Applies Any establishment except a grocery store or food service establishment, in which the slaughter of livestock or poultry, or the preparation of livestock products or poultry products is maintained for transportation or sale, must be inspected and obtain a license.

When To Apply Application should be made and a license issued before operations begin in Iowa.

Initial Requirements Facilities must be reviewed and approved prior to licensure.

Duration License expires on June 30 following the date of issuance. No proration of license fee for part year license and no transfer of current license to a new entity.

Processing Time Varies on requested status of plant (Custom or Official).

Fee Structure License: $25 or $50 depending on volume of product generated by facility.

Renewal Requirements Does not pertain.
