About

An Iowa Grant of Inspection is required for all Iowa establishments wishing to slaughter and process cattle, swine, sheep, goats, domestic deer, elk, poultry or ratites for sale (and not granted inspection by US. Department of Agriculture). Application contains information on type of operation (meat/poultry), applicant address, plant location, type of organization, days and hours of operation, type of operation (slaughter, processing or both), types of processing operations and names of owner or officers of a corporation.

Who Applies Any facility that slaughters species amenable to the Meat and Poultry Inspection Acts and/or processes/sells/transports meat or poultry products for wholesale through other businesses.

When To Apply Application may be submitted at any time.

Initial Requirements A meat or poultry establishment must contact the Iowa Dept. of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Meat and Poultry Inspection Bureau to request the grant of inspection.  Grants are issued on completion and review of all facility and food safety regulatory requirements.

Duration There is not a set time limit. New applications should be submitted when any of the information or the form changes such as name, ownership, operations. Inspection can be suspended or withdrawn by the Agency if violations occur.

Processing Time Varies. Processing time can be one week or months depending upon when the facility is ready to operate and meets requirements.

Renewal Requirements Does not pertain.

Exam Does not pertain.

Additional Information The Grant of Inspection is issued together with or following issuance of a Meat and Poultry establishment license.
