Licensing is required of any contractors and technicians of fire protection systems.

Who Applies Contractor (business owner) and employees who installs or maintains fire protection systems.

When To Apply Initial license: license must be obtained before performing work in Iowa requiring licensure. Renewals: 30 days prior to expiration. Licenses expire on March 31.

Initial Requirements Contractors must also register with the Iowa Workforce Development https://laborportal.iwd.iowa.gov/iwd_portal/dashboards/contractor-home

Duration One year for contractor; Two years for technicians and technician trainees.

Processing Time 30 days.

Fee Structure Contractor License Fee: $400 – one year $50 for each listed responsible managing employee $50 for each selected endorsement Technician License Fee: $175 – two years $25 for each selected endorsement Technician Trainee License Fee: $100 – two years

Renewal Requirements Current valid certification specific to endorsements.

Exam Not applicable.
