If your business requires electric transmission service (69kV or more), the transmission provider must obtain a franchise from the Iowa Utilities Board. Contact your local utility to determine the need for additional transmission services. Contact the Iowa Utilities Board if you need assistance in determining your local utility. The utility will file a petition for the electric transmission franchise from the Iowa Utilities Board.

Who Applies Anyone building an electric line capable of operating at 69kV or more.

When To Apply For a new franchise, a petition should be filed as early as possible but not less than 30 days from the informational meeting date. A petition for an extension of a franchise must be filed at least one year prior to the expiration of the franchise.

Initial Requirements Iowa Administrative Code 199—11 provides information explaining what is required for a filing pertaining to an electric transmission line.

Duration 25 Years.

Processing Time Approximately ten months from petition filing, which does not include precursor public informational meetings or a public hearing, if required.

Fee Structure Fees are based on Iowa Utilities Board staff time required for review and processing consistent with Iowa Code 478.

Renewal Requirements 25 years.
