About

“Orthotist” means a health care professional, specifically educated and trained in orthotic patient care, who measures, designs, fabricates, fits, or services orthoses and may assist in the formulation of the order and treatment plan of orthoses for the support or correction of disabilities caused by neuromusculoskeletal diseases, injuries, or deformities.

Who Applies Persons who are eligible to practice as orthotists in Iowa.

When To Apply After all education and residency requirements for licensure have been met.

Initial Requirements Prospective licensees will need a minimum of a bachelor\’s degree and completion of an education program approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Prospective licensees will have to complete a one year residency program accredited by the National Commission on Orthotic & Prosthetic Education (NCOPE). Prospective licensees will have to pass a national exam in orthotics. IAC 645-221.3 allows for the (ABC) American Board for Certification or the (BOC) Board of Certification, International exam in orthotics.

Duration 6 to 29 months for initial, 2 years for renewal.

Exam Applicants must pass either the American Board of Certification exam in orthotics or the Board of Certification, International exam in orthotics.
