Who Applies Contractors and technicians who install, maintain, inspect, or test fire, security, and nurse call alarm systems.

When To Apply Initial license: license must be obtained before performing work in Iowa requiring licensure. Renewals: 30 days prior to expiration of license. Licenses expire on September 30.

Initial Requirements Contractors must also register with the Iowa Workforce Development https://laborportal.iwd.iowa.gov/iwd_portal/dashboards/contractor-home

Duration Three years for contractors and technicians; one year for technician trainees.

Processing Time 6-8 weeks.

Fee Structure Criminal history check: $35 Contractor License Fee: $300 – three years $50 for each listed responsible managing employee $50 for each selected endorsement Technician License Fee: $150 – three years $25 for each selected endorsement Technician Trainee License Fee: $50 – one year

Renewal Requirements Current valid certification specific to endorsements, and new criminal history check.

Exam Approved national certification programs (NICET, ESA, etc.).
