The primary focus of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

Who Applies Any individual who wishes to become certified as an AEMT.

When To Apply After completing course requirements.

Initial Requirements An applicant must be at least 17 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English, and hold current Iowa certification as an EMT.

Duration Two years.

Processing Time Two Weeks.

Fee Structure Initial Certification Application fee: $30 Renewal fee: $10

Renewal Requirements 36 hours of approved continuing education and current course completion in CPR.

Exam National Registry of EMTs cognitive and psychomotor exam for the AEMT level.

Additional Information Applicants must complete a background check before certification.
